Filter speakers, sessions and sponsors by custom fields

Custom fields on speakers, sessions and sponsors add details to their pages in the app, such as a session level or a sponsor's industry. With Make filterable on, attendees can also filter the Speakers, Schedule and Sponsors lists by the field's values.

Before you start

  • You need to be an event admin or an organization admin.

  • Attendees see the values of speaker, session and sponsor fields whenever a value is filled in. There is no setting to hide them.

  • A filter appears only when at least one speaker, session or sponsor has a value in the field.

  • For registrant fields and the People list, see Create a custom field.

Where to find it

  • Fields: Custom content > Custom Fields in the admin panel.

  • Values: the speaker form (Content > Speakers), the session editor (Content > Schedule) and the sponsor form (Sponsors).

Set up a filterable field

  1. Open Custom content > Custom Fields and select Create new.

  2. Enter the Field name. Attendees see it on profiles and as the name of the filter.

  3. Enter the Field key.

  4. Under Assigned to, choose Speakers, Sessions or Sponsors.

  5. Choose the Field type. Filter options are the exact values you enter, so Single choice or Multiple choice avoids near-duplicates such as AI and A.I..

  6. For a choice field, select Add option for each option.

  7. Turn on Make filterable.

  8. Select Create.

  9. Check that the field's Filterable column shows Yes.

To make an existing field filterable, select Edit in its row, turn on Make filterable and select Update.

Add values

Your field names depend on what you set up for your event. The session example below shows values in an event's existing fields.

  • Speakers: open Content > Speakers, select Edit Profile for the speaker, fill in the field after Bio and select Save and update.

  • Sessions: open Content > Schedule, select Edit for the session, fill in the field at the end of Details and select Update.

  • Sponsors: open the sponsor under Sponsors > Sponsors, select Edit Details, fill in the field under Custom fields and select Update. Sponsor admins don't see this section.

Single choice and Multiple choice fields show a list of your options. For Custom values, type a value and press Enter, then add the next one. You can also set values through the Brella API. The speaker, schedule and sponsor CSV imports don't include custom fields.

What attendees see

  • On profiles and pages: the field name and its values appear on the speaker's profile (above the bio), the session page and the sponsor's booth page. Values that are web addresses open as links. Selecting any other value copies it ("Copied to clipboard").

  • In the lists: the Speakers, Schedule and Sponsors pages show a Filters button and a row of filter buttons. In Schedule, the Filters button is an icon. Each filterable field is one filter, named after the field. Its options are the values in use, in alphabetical order.

  • Choosing values: attendees select one or more values and Apply. Several values in one filter show items that have any of them. Clear filters removes all filters.

  • Two or more custom field filters: Speakers and Schedule show items that match a selected value in any of the filters. Sponsors shows only sponsors that match a selected value in every filter.

  • Sponsor tabs: a sponsor tab lists only the values of the sponsors in that tab's categories.

  • Session cards: you can show one session field as the label on session cards. See Card design in Schedule settings reference.

Limits

  • Values must match exactly to be grouped: AI and ai are two filter options.

  • In the alphabetical order, values that start with a capital letter come before values that start with a lowercase letter.

  • Session filter options include values from every session in the event, also sessions limited to lists the attendee is not in.

Troubleshooting

A field doesn't appear under Filters
Make filterable is off, or no speaker, session or sponsor has a value in the field. Check the Filterable column and add values.

A filter value shows no sessions
The sessions with that value are on another day, or limited to lists the attendee is not in.

Attendees see a value that was meant to stay internal
Speaker, session and sponsor values are always shown. Remove the value or delete the field.
