Read the stream, session and booth traffic export files

Written by Customer Success

Stream, session and sponsor booth traffic exports share one file format: an interactions file with one row per recorded view or viewing period, and a visitors file with one row per attendee. Brella emails the files as a zip.

Before you start

  • You need to be an organization admin or an event admin. Sponsor admins can export their own booth when Traffic analytics is on for it.

  • Only signed-in attendees in the mobile app and the web app are recorded. Widgets on your website are not.

  • What is recorded differs per source:

    • Streams: each time an attendee opens the stream, and the time the stream player is open.

    • Sessions: Watch now clicks, one per visit to the session page, and in the web app the time the session's stream plays in the app.

    • Booths: each booth open, each carousel slide view, and the time a slide is on screen.

The interactions file

One row per recorded entry: a view (an open or click) or a viewing period. Rows are sorted by start_time.

Column

What it contains

id

The item type, the item's ID and the attendee's ID, for example StreamLink-12-3456, Timeslot-78-3456 or Sponsor-9-3456.

email, first_name, last_name, job_title, company

From the attendee's profile. A removed account shows Deleted and User with the other fields empty.

ticket_type_list_name, ticket_type_list_id

The attendee's ticket type list.

content_title

The stream title, the session title, Booth for a booth open, or the slide title.

url

The stream address, the session's stream link, the slide's address, or empty for a booth open.

interaction

view for an open or click, time_spent for a viewing period.

start_time

Time of the view, or start of the viewing period, in the event's time zone.

end_time

End of the viewing period. Empty for views and for periods still running at export time.

duration_seconds

Length of the viewing period in seconds. 0 for views and for periods still running at export time.

type

stream-links for streams and sessions; Booth, image or iframe for booths.

A viewing period can include a brief return gap if the attendee has not started another tracked viewing. Recorded time does not prove uninterrupted attention.

The visitors file

Streams and sessions: one row per attendee, longest total time first.

Column

What it contains

id, email, first_name, last_name, job_title, company, ticket_type_list_name, ticket_type_list_id

As in the interactions file.

content_title

The stream or session title.

view_count

Number of opens or clicks. For sessions, the number of Watch now clicks.

duration_seconds

Total viewing time in seconds. For sessions, only viewing in the web app counts.

Booths: one row per attendee, with the same person columns and total_time_spent_in_booth_seconds: the attendee's viewing time across the booth page and all its slides. Booth and slide view counts are in the interactions file only.

Example: one person, several rows

These fictional stream examples show only the relevant columns. The interactions file can contain several rows for one person:

id,interaction,duration_seconds
StreamLink-12-3456,view,0
StreamLink-12-3456,time_spent,180
StreamLink-12-3456,view,0
StreamLink-12-3456,time_spent,120

For the same person and stream, the visitors file summarizes the activity:

id,view_count,duration_seconds
StreamLink-12-3456,2,300

There is 1 visitor, 2 opens, and 300 seconds of recorded viewing. Divide 300 by 60 to get 5 minutes. The 4 interaction rows do not mean 4 people.

Use the visitors file to count people for that item. Use interaction rows to understand opens and viewing periods. Do not add the totals from both files.

For sessions, mobile Watch now clicks can raise view_count without adding watch time. The link opens outside Brella; session watch time comes from the web app.

Streams: time frame

The per-stream export covers the time frame set in Select time frame on the Analytics tab. The interactions file lists entries that start in the time frame. The visitors file counts entries that overlap it. The all-streams export has no time frame.

Limits

  • Session watch time comes from the web app only, while the session's stream plays in the app. The mobile app opens the link outside Brella and records only the Watch now click.

  • Viewing on the stream provider's own page or in another tool is not recorded.

Troubleshooting

"Traffic analytics not found. Traffic analytics is available only for sessions that have a stream URL."
You selected Export .zip under Session traffic data, but no content slot has a Stream/Video Url.

The zip has an empty file for a stream
Nobody has watched that stream. The all-streams export includes every stream of the event, hidden ones included.

A visitor is in the visitors file but has no rows in the interactions file
For a stream, the interactions file lists only entries that start in the time frame. The visitors file also counts viewing periods that started earlier and continued into the time frame. Widen Select time frame on the Analytics tab and export again.
