Set up stream chat, access lists and the side panel

Each stream has three options that shape what attendees see around the player: a Chat tab, access limited to lists, and side-panel tabs that load external tools such as Q&A or polls.

Before you start

  • You need to be an organization admin or an event admin.

  • The stream must exist. See Add a stream with an embed URL.

  • Open Content > Streams, then select the stream's row to open its settings. Chat and access changes need Save changes.

Turn the chat on or off

  1. Open the stream's row.

  2. Turn Enable Stream chat on or off.

  3. Select Save changes.

Brella creates the chat when you save with the switch on. You can turn the chat on or off at any time, before or during the event. Messages stay stored while the chat is off and come back when you turn it on.

What attendees see

  • A Chat tab with the player. On web windows 1024 px and wider the tab sits in a panel to the right of the player. On narrower windows and in the mobile app it sits below the player.

  • A Show all messages button above longer chats opens the full history.

  • All attendees who can open the stream can read and write in the chat.

Before the event, assign an event admin or organization admin to monitor the stream chat. Agree who answers questions and who removes inappropriate messages.

Delete a message

Event admins and organization admins can delete messages in the app. Attendees have no delete option.

  1. Open the stream in the web app or the mobile app and open the Chat tab.

  2. Right-click the message (web app) or press and hold it (mobile app).

  3. Select Delete message.

  4. Confirm the deletion. In the mobile app, select Delete in the "Delete message?" dialog. In the web app, the browser asks "Delete message?" with the message text; select OK.

The message disappears for everyone. There is no chat moderation or export in the admin panel.

Limit who can watch

  1. Open the stream's row.

  2. Under Who can watch this stream?, choose Anyone or Specific lists.

  3. With Specific lists, pick one or more lists under Select lists. The list offers Ticket type lists and Custom lists. Save changes stays inactive until you pick a list.

  4. Select Save changes. After the event start date, Brella asks you to confirm every save of a stream; select Yes.

How access resolves:

  • Anyone: every attendee of the event sees the stream.

  • Specific lists: attendees see the stream if their ticket type list is selected or if they are a member of a selected custom list. One match is enough.

  • Attendees without access do not see the stream in their list, so they do not see its chat or side-panel tabs either.

Access changes do not reach open apps live; attendees see them when they refresh. An attendee who has the stream open and loses access sees "Stream not available" after the refresh. See also How permissions work when someone is on several lists.

Add side-panel tabs

Side-panel items load an external web page in a tab next to the Chat tab: Q&A, polls, slides, forms or any page that allows embedding.

  1. Open the stream's row. Edit Side Panel (Integrations) is available only after the stream has been saved once.

  2. Select Edit Side Panel (Integrations). The Side Panel (Integrations) drawer opens.

  3. Select New.

  4. Enter a Title. Attendees see it as the tab name.

  5. Enter the tool's embed URL in Url. It must be an http or https web address. If you leave out https://, Brella adds it.

  6. Select Create. The item is saved right away; the stream's Save changes is not needed for side-panel items.

To edit or remove an item, select it in the drawer to open Side bar item. Change it and select Update, or select Delete and confirm "Are you sure?". Drag items in the drawer to change the tab order.

What attendees see

  • One tab per item, in the drawer's order, after the Chat tab. On web windows 1024 px and wider the tabs share the right panel with the chat; on narrower windows and in the mobile app they sit below the player.

  • The tool loads inside the tab: an iframe in the web app, an in-app browser in the mobile app. The tool must allow embedding on next.brella.io (or your white-label domain) and work in a mobile browser.

  • Items apply to the stream you edited only. Add them again on other streams.

Troubleshooting

Attendees do not see the Chat tab
Enable Stream chat is off for that stream, or the attendee opened the stream before you saved the change. Turn it on, select Save changes, and ask the attendee to reopen the stream.

An attendee on a selected list does not see the stream
Check that the attendee is a member of the custom list, or that their ticket type list is the one selected. The switch next to the stream title must be on, and Settings > Use streams must be on.

A side-panel tab stays empty
The page refuses to load inside another website, or the attendee's network blocks it. Use the tool's embed URL rather than its share URL, and check the tool's allowed domains. See Resolve live streaming issues.
