Set up matchmaking with Brella templates

Written by Customer Success

Brella includes 17 matchmaking templates. Each template fills the setup wizard with categories, interests and intents for one field, plus personas, industries and functions for the identity step. You review and edit the content before anything is saved.

Before you start

  • You need to be an organization admin or an event admin.

  • Templates are offered only in the setup wizard, which opens from the Matchmaking start page while matchmaking is off.

  • Warning: If the start page shows Re-enable matchmaking, the event already has matchmaking data. Running the wizard and selecting Proceed on Matchmaking data replaces every category and interest and permanently deletes attendees' interest selections. Proceed on Identity data replaces personas, industries and functions and clears them from attendee profiles. Select Re-enable matchmaking instead to keep the existing setup. See Enable matchmaking.

Where to find it

Matchmaking in the admin panel, then Start matchmaking. The first wizard step is Choose a template.

Templates

The Choose a template step shows Start from scratch and these templates, in this order:

  • General Business

  • Blockchain

  • Design

  • Startup

  • Fintech

  • Insurtech

  • HR

  • Real Estate, Construction

  • Sales Account Management

  • Manufacturing

  • Media

  • AI

  • Govtech, NGO

  • Foodtech

  • Venture Capital

  • Event Organizing

  • Health Tech

Every template includes personas, functions and industries for the Identity data step.

Set up with a template

  1. Open Matchmaking and select Start matchmaking.

  2. On Choose a template, select the template card. The wizard opens Matchmaking data with the template's categories.

  3. Review the content. Select a category in Category to see its interests in Interests; select an interest to see which intents are ticked in Intents.

  4. Edit as needed. Move the pointer over a row to show the pencil icon (rename) and the trash icon (delete). Select the + icon or Add new to add a row. Drag rows to reorder them. Tick or untick intents.

  5. Select Proceed. The categories and interests are saved. Matchmaking is still off.

  6. On Identity data (titled Set up the Identity Data), the Persona, Industry and Function tabs hold the template's lists. Edit them the same way.

  7. Select Proceed to save the lists and turn on matchmaking and identity. To turn on matchmaking only, select Skip Identity and, in Are you sure?, select Skip Identity; the identity lists are then not saved. Go back returns to the step.

The admin panel opens Schedule. Open Matchmaking to edit the result in Overview and Identity.

Rename on an identity tab lets you give the list a custom name and onboarding question (Naming > Custom name, then Name and Onboarding question, then Save). The admin panel shows Identity updated successfully. The name is saved at once, before you select Proceed.

Set up from scratch

  1. On Choose a template, select Start from scratch.

  2. In Category, select Add Category or the + icon. Brella adds a category named Main category with one interest named Interest, with the Networking intent ticked.

  3. Rename both: move the pointer over the row, select the pencil icon, enter the name and press Enter. A name can't be empty.

  4. Add more categories with the + icon in Category. Add more interests with the + icon in Interests while the category is selected.

  5. Select each interest and tick its intents in Intents. Each interest needs at least 1 intent.

  6. Select Proceed, then complete Identity data as in steps 6 and 7 of the template setup. On Identity data, Proceed is unavailable while all three lists are empty; add an item or select Skip Identity.

Import instead of a template

On the start page, Import offers two options. Use an existing event copies categories and identity data from another event in your organization. Import CSV takes a Matchmaking data file and an optional Identity data file. See Import matchmaking categories from a CSV file.

After the wizard

  • Edit categories, interests and intents at any time in Matchmaking > Overview, and the identity lists in Matchmaking > Identity. Select Save changes after editing.

  • In Matchmaking > Settings, section General, Mandatory identity data has Personas, Industries and Functions checked by default. Attendees must answer each checked list that has items.

  • Templates are a starting point. Your changes apply to your event only; the templates themselves don't change.

What attendees see

  • With Networking-Oriented onboarding (set in Details, the default), joining includes a Select your interests step with your categories and interests. If identity is on, a Personalize your profile step with the identity lists comes first.

  • Attendees must select at least 1 interest.

Troubleshooting

Missing Identity data
Identity is on but all three lists are empty. The admin panel shows this message with Go to Identity. Add at least one persona, industry or function in Matchmaking > Identity, or turn off Enable identity in Matchmaking > Settings.

Proceed is unavailable on Matchmaking data
There is no category or interest yet, an interest has no intent (shown in red), or a name is empty. Fix this and select Proceed again.

Proceed is unavailable on Identity data
All three lists are empty. Add an item or select Skip Identity.
