The HTML editor lets you paste your own email HTML, built in any tool, and personalize it with Brella's merge tags. Brella replaces the tags, adds the unsubscribe footer and sends the rest of your HTML unchanged.
Before you start
You need to be an organization admin or an event admin.
The event must be Invite only. See Introduction to custom emails.
Complete the Settings step first. The editor opens at the Content step.
Have your HTML ready. Images must be hosted on a public URL; the HTML editor has no image upload.
Warning: Switching to the Visual editor deletes the content in the HTML editor.
Where to find it
Communications > Custom Emails > Create New > Proceed, then select HTML editor at the top of the Content step and confirm "Switching editors will delete your existing content. Do you want to proceed?" with Switch. An existing email opens in the editor it was built with; the switch is not shown.
Build the email
Paste your HTML into the HTML code field.
Check the result in the Preview on the right. It updates 1 second after you stop typing.
To personalize the email, select a tag under Available Tags ("Copied!") and paste it where the value goes.
Select Send test to email the HTML to your own address. Tags are displayed as tags and the QR code is a static test image.
Select Review, then Save as draft or the button for your sending method (Send now, Schedule for later or Enable trigger), and confirm. Nothing is saved before this.
Merge tags
The Available Tags panel lists the same tags as the visual editor, plus QR code image, which copies the snippet <img src="cid:qrcode.png" alt="QR Code" />. Place that snippet where you want the recipient's QR code. The QR code is only included for in-person recipients whose list has Show QR code on.
For the tag list, their values and which recipients they work for, see Build a custom email with the visual editor. Tags use the form {{tag_name}}. Brella renders the HTML with the Liquid template language, so Liquid conditions also work, for example {% if seats_count %}Your invite has {{seats_count}} seats.{% endif %}.
What Brella changes in your HTML
Merge tags are replaced with the recipient's values. Tags that do not apply to the recipient become empty.
Brella's links, such as the join link, carry a tracking code so that clicks can be counted.
The unsubscribe footer is added at the end of the body: "This email was sent to <address>" followed by the link "unsubscribe from this list". See Unsubscribes from custom emails.
The QR code image is attached when the HTML contains
cid:qrcode.pngand the recipient is eligible. To add the footer, Brella parses the HTML as a document. Missing
<html>and<body>tags are added.
Brella does not remove tags, styles or scripts from the HTML editor's content. Only designs built in the visual editor are cleaned of unsafe HTML.
Limits
Content: up to 100,000 characters.
No image upload. Host images on a public URL.
The Visual editor / HTML editor switch is only available while creating a new email.
Sent emails open read-only.
Troubleshooting
The preview is empty
The HTML code field is empty, or you are still typing. The preview updates 1 second after you stop typing.
The QR code shows as a broken image in my email tool
The snippet cid:qrcode.png only resolves in the sent email. Use Send test or the Preview to check it.
